Le temps réconcilié, 1990 / 2004

… Le scandale de ces photographies, c’est leur détente, leur sérénité, leur innocence en cela qu’on n’y sent aucun désir de nuire, ni aucun racisme de l’âge. Elles sont, à chaque prise, le temps réconcilié. Elles sont le temps qui retrouve corps.

Gérard Lüthi has focused his camera on a subject close to home and close to his heart: his father and his son. Without any cloying sentimentality – the bane of family snapshots and commercial greetings cards – he has produced a moving series of images in which love and affection, and the passing of the torch from generation to generation, are expressed through the language of the body.[…] The oppositions within the image give it its strength. First, the scale of the two figures: the large bulk of the elder Lüthi, his arms gently holding the tiny form of the child in a gesture of protection and guidance; second, the skin, making the passage of time: the weathered hide and bulging veins of the grandfather’s body, reminding us of an ancient tree, contrasted with the smooth, peach-like skin of his grandson – a blank page on which the experiences of a lifetime have still to be written.
